I had always heard about the benefits of Pilates from my wife, so about 5 months ago I joined Clearly Pilates and began taking instruction from Julie. As I had hoped, my core strength, balance and flexibility all improved substantially. What I did not expect is how Pilates has complemented development in other physical activities like golf and weightlifting. Not that I am a great golfer or push exceptionally heavy weights, but I do find that I am hitting the golf ball farther and am reaching a higher plateau in my weightlifting routine. I attribute this improvement to what I simply call “Pilates strength.”

Two months ago, I began my Pilates journey. My wife had started 4 weeks earlier and I thought this would be a good activity for us to experience together.I mentioned to Julie that I have noticed subtle changes in my posture, balance and core strength which has allowed me to perform everyday tasks with greater ease. For example, I can now hold my balance long enough on each leg that I am able to put on pants in the standing position. This sounds trivial but after recovering from trauma-induced hip replacement surgery, this regained ability is satisfying. My upper torso flexibility and strength have also noticeably improved. Pilates has been a game-changer for me. It’s certainly not easy but the results are gratifying.

Making Pilates a part of my off-season routine has been a great addition to my weekly process. The movements involved allow me to connect to further the muscle groups I work on already, as well as tapping into parts of my core and lower body that needed attention. Julie works hard to challenge me weekly with the exercises, and I’m so excited to see how our work together will translate to the field.
